A gamma-ray dosimeter with wide energy and exposure rate ranges has been developed. The dosimeter is composed of a surface barrier detector covered with Lucite and surrounded by a thin copper shield. Because of the modest cost of the system, it is well suited for use as a remote area environmental monitor around a nuclear power plant or area monitor inside the plant.
