Cables in a nuclear power plant radiation environment are subject to several possible damage mechanisms. Whether or not these mechanisms produce damage in a cable depends on the specific environment and the damage thresholds for the cable materials. Five probable radiation damage mechanisms in cables have been identified. These mechanisms and their thresholds are discussed along with considerations pertinent to qualification testing of cables for service in reactor environments.
