A metering system has been devised and tested which utilizes a solid-electrolyte oxygen-activity meter to measure the carbon activity in high-temperature sodium. The activity of the carbon is related to the activity of oxygen by the reactions C + CO2 ⇄ 2CO2CO + O2 ⇄ 2CO2Good agreement was obtained between actual calibration points and values calculated from thermodynamic considerations.
