The ratio of gamma heating in tungsten to that in an equal volume of water is calculated for the case of a thin tungsten detector in a water shield. One-dimensional transport-theory calculations yielded response polynomials that predict this ratio as a function of source energy, shield thickness, and detector thickness. Electron transport effects and useful results are presented in the form of graphs.
