Alpha autoradiography is used extensively to study the distribution of plutonium in fuels. The relatively high energy typical of plutonium alphas sets a limit on the resolution available when the normal contact technique is used. The resolution is markedly improved by using a thin absorber of a heavy metal (e.g. platinum) between the sample and the registrant film.
