Externally cooled fuel pins and internally cooled fuel tubes are compared for otherwise identical reactors. The tube design overcomes the deficiency of the pin design in fission-gas pressure venting. Fuel tubes have lower temperature differentials and thermal stresses than fuel pins. A greater number of smaller fuel tubes are required to replace fuel pins.
