A sensitive thermobalance was constructed for the gravimetric analysis of small samples of irradiated oxide fuels. Its utility has been demonstrated by measuring the oxygen-to-metal ratio in specific regions within failed fuel elements, or at specific radial locations within fuel which has undergone the steep thermal gradient attendant within irradiation in a high neutron flux.
