At Savannah River, ²⁴⁴Cm is being produced from ²³⁹Pu in reactor irradiations designed for successive neutron captures. A separations process, which has been successfully piloted, isolates curium from intermediates (plutonium isotopes and ²⁴³Am) and fission products. The 2.65 W of heat generated per gram of curium in the product can be used in isotopic power sources.
