A simple and effective technique to quantify ovality in any elliptically distorted geometry is derived and demonstrated. The technique has been applied to Experimental Breeder Reactor II blanket and driver-fuel elements to characterize the actual diametral dimensions and the mechanical interactions involving the fuel and its cladding, and those between the element and its spacer wire, its neighboring elements, and the subassembly duct.
