Important problems in fusion technology and fusion materials research whose investigation requires intense fast neutron sources are surveyed. The most urgent tasks concern the investigation of 14-MeV neutron radiation damage in the first wall and other structural components of future fusion reactors and the development of low-activation materials. The needs of neutron sources according to energy range, neutron intensity, flux and fluence, and the scope of present capabilities are outlined for this special field of applications.
