The nature of the mass transport phenomena occurring at or near the liquid lithium-solid iron interface has been investigated. The diffusion of iron through a surface corrosion product was the suggested grain boundary grooving mechanism. Capillarity was eliminated as one of the possible driving forces for grain boundary penetration of iron by liquid lithium.
