The main aspects of the Superphénix neutron monitoring system are described, followed by a presentation of the theoretical and experimental studies that were used for its design. The main results of the commissioning tests for this system are also presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the calculation and evolution of the inherent neutron source during the first months of reactor operation.
