Status and plans for the Japanese experimental reactor studies are reviewed. Both ITER and FER designs have been technically judged appropriate to meet the objectives of the next step in a long range Japanese fusion program. Status of both physics and technology R&D is briefly reviewed. The results obtained in the past several years are quite encouraging in view of exploring steady state for ITER. Key issue for the success of the ITER EDA is discussed along with the role of home team and industries.
