One of the tasks of the ITER Systems Analysis Group has been safety and environmental analyses. The safety analyses show that radiological doses from operational effluents and accidents are consistent with anticipated regulatory dose limits. To improve safety further and to meet the ambitious goal of “passive safety”, further efforts to reduce inventories of tritium and activation products are proposed. Most major safety issues are now associated with Plasma Facing Components (PFC).
