The promise of beryllium as a plasma-facing material in advanced fusion devices is discussed in the context of the design requirements for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). The properties of beryllium and the technology for plasma spraying of beryllium are summarized, and an overview of key issues and recommendations for the selection of plasma-facing armor are given.
