In the present study we have identified some key parameters that require continuous measurement by the instrumentation and control system to assure safe operation in tandem mirror reactors. Failure modes possible in each subsystem of the plant have also been identified. Particular emphasis was placed on the heat transport and flux monitoring systems. In addition, general factors to be considered in the design and the performance requirements of the plant instrumentation and control system are outlined.
