Ray begins term as American Nuclear Society President
Also installed as the Society's Vice President/President-Elect was Dr. Larry R. Foulke. Dr. Kyle H. Turner began the second year of his two-year term as the Society's Treasurer.
Ray is executive vice president of Rosemead, Calif.-based Generation, one of Southern California Edison's business units. He joined SCE in 1970, and has served in his present position since 1995. He is responsible for all power generating facilities, including nuclear and related fuel supplies.
A registered mechanical and nuclear engineer, Ray also is responsible for wholesale purchases and sales of electricity.
Prior to joining SCE, Ray was a reactor plant engineer for the U.S. Navy, assigned to the staff of Admiral Hyman G. Rickover in the Naval Reactors Division of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
In 1970, he became supervising engineer at SCE, overseeing licensing and safety at the San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station (SONGS). At SONGS, he has held a number of management positions, including manager of quality assurance, project manager for Units 2 and 3, and station manager.
A graduate of UCLA and the California Institute of Technology, Ray was elected vice president and site manager of SONGS in 1983.
Foulke, a resident of Pittsburgh, is manager of the Reactor Methods and Programming Group at Bechtel Bettis, Inc. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Army Nuclear Power Program from 1966 to 1968, attaining the rank of captain. He joined Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in 1968, where he held management positions in performance analysis, reactor methods, reactor safety, environmental assessment, physical security, safeguards and nuclear materials management.
Foulke, a registered professional nuclear engineer, held management positions in training and simulation with Westinghouse Nuclear Energy Systems from 1981 to 1991.
A graduate of Kansas State University with bachelor's and master's degrees in nuclear engineering, Foulke was a Fulbright Fellow at the Institute for Atomenergi in Kjeller, Norway. He earned his Ph.D in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967.
Turner, of Evergreen, Colo., is chief executive officer of McCallum-Turner Inc. His experience includes nuclear power plant siting, licensing, operations, safety, environmental compliance and waste management.
Four new members of the ANS board of directors began their three-year terms during the Florida meeting:

- Dr. Kathryn A. McCarthy, Department Manager, INEEL, Idaho Falls, Idaho;
- Dr. William F. Naughton, Manager of Research and Development, Exelon Nuclear Co., Warrenville, Ill.;
- Emmy L.A. Roos, Communications/Marketing Specialist, Denver, Colo.
