House approves Yucca Mountain

By an overwhelming 306-117 vote, the House of Representatives on Wednesday approved President's Bush's endorsement of Yucca Mountain as the nation's first geological repository.

Yucca Mountain's next stop is the Senate, where debate is expected to begin later this summer. A vote in the Senate could come as early as July, according to many political observers.

The American Nuclear Society supports Yucca Mountain, and encourages the Senate to "recognize the features of Yucca Mountain that our members, as well as the Department of Energy, embraced when endorsing this site: that it has the characteristics and the engineering to exceed the high regulatory standard for public health and safety," according to ANS President Dr. Gail H. Marcus.
