ANS Names 2020 Congressional Fellow

ANS is pleased to announce Bradley J. Williams as the 2020 recipient of the Glenn T. Seaborg Congressional Science and Engineering Fellowship. Williams is currently a Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), where he serves as an expert on a wide range of issues related to the technical, economic, and policy aspects of nuclear energy.

Harsh Desai, chair of the ANS Congressional Fellowship committee, said, “Brad will be an excellent addition to the policymaking community as a congressional staffer. His DOE work experience will be important as the U.S. Congress considers several key issues pertaining to nuclear science, engineering, and technology.”

Williams has been with the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy for the past 11 years, and prior to his current position he led multiple research and development (R&D) programs, including the Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP), where he was instrumental in establishing NEUP as the robust program it is today. He also spent time as the Acting Assistant Manager for R&D at the DOE’s Idaho Operations Office.

Upon learning of his appointment, Williams said, “Working on the Hill has always been a goal of mine. I’m grateful for my time at the Department of Energy but am extremely excited for this new opportunity to represent ANS and work with our Nation’s policymakers.”

Since the start of the Glenn T. Seaborg Congressional Science and Engineering Fellowship in 2000, the program has given nuclear professionals the opportunity to learn how legislative policymaking affects nuclear science, energy, and technology. The unique, year-long fellowship allows those professionals to work directly with members of Congress and their staff on critical nuclear policy decisions.

Williams joined ANS in 2010, and is a member of the Biology and Medicine Division, the Isotopes and Radiation Division, the Operations and Power Division, and the Young Members Group.
