ANS Statement on the NWAA of 2019
ANS President, John Kelly made the following statement on the Nuclear Waste Administration Act of 2019:
"We applaud Senators Alexander, Feinstein, and Murkowski for introducing the Nuclear Waste Administration Act of 2019. ANS agrees there are substantial opportunities to improve the country’s approach the management of used nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. This approach should include the creation of an independent entity to manage our stockpile of used nuclear fuel. The original Nuclear Waste Policy Act was passed in 1982 and amended in 1987, but it has been decades since we have seen concrete progress on nuclear waste policy reform. It is past time for Congress to update our laws to reflect 21st century realities. Congress must constructively address the waste issue to ensure the availability of clean and reliable nuclear energy now and in the future."
