The ANS Washington Office reported that ANS Past Presidents have sent a letter to Majority Leader Daschle urging action on an energy bill by the Senate.
November 20, 2001
The Honorable Tom Daschle
Majority Leader
U.S. Senate
509 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Daschle:
As the current and former Presidents of the American Nuclear Society, we are writing to express our support for passage of comprehensive energy legislation before the end of this session of Congress. The House of Representatives passed energy legislation in August. It is critical that the Senate pass legislation so that the proposed elements of the Bush Administration's National Energy Plan can be implemented in a timely manner.
The ANS feels strongly that enactment of comprehensive and visionary energy legislation will help to alleviate the current economic downturn and assure secure energy supplies for America. We believe the enactment of federal energy policy is critical to any effective plan to stimulate the economy. Leadership from Congress that will lessen our dependence on foreign energy resources is crucial to achieving energy independence for the future.
The American Nuclear Society stands ready to assist the Senate in the development of comprehensive energy legislation. We remain confident that Congress recognizes the importance of such legislation and that it can be deliberated and passed before the end of the current session.
The American Nuclear Society (ANS) is a professional organization of scientists and engineers devoted to the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology. Our 11,000 members come from diverse technical disciplines ranging from physics and nuclear safety to operations and power, and from across the full spectrum of the national and international nuclear enterprise, including government, academia, research laboratories and private industry.
Sincerely,
