New ANS officers and Board members begin terms

The new president of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), Dr. Gail H. Marcus, presided over the 146th meeting of the Board of Directors, held on June 21, at the conclusion of the ANS annual meeting in Milwaukee, WI.

"The nuclear industry today faces new opportunities opened by deregulation, increasing globalization, and concerns about current and future energy supplies," Marcus said. "Through its many programs, ANS will continue to promote growth in the understanding and application of nuclear science and technology."

At the same time, Mr. Harold B. Ray took office as vice president/president-elect and Dr. Kyle H. Turner assumed a two-year term as treasurer. Seven new board members took their seats at this meeting.


Gail H. Marcus - ANS President
Dr. Marcus is principal deputy director of the Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology, U.S. Department of Energy. Marcus joined DOE in 1999 after 14 years with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). She is an ANS Fellow, has chaired many ANS committees and the Nuclear Installations Safety Division, and has served on the Board of Directors. Marcus was the first woman to earn a doctorate in nuclear engineering in the United States. Her term as ANS president runs until June 2002.


Harold B. Ray - ANS Vice President/President-Elect
Harold B. Ray is Executive Vice President of Generation at Southern California Edison (SCE). He joined SCE in 1970 and assumed his current position in 1995. He is responsible for all power generating facilities as well as wholesale purchases and sales of electricity. Ray is a registered mechanical and nuclear engineer. He will serve as vice-president/president-elect until June 2002, when he will become ANS president for a one-year term.


Kyle H. Turner - ANS Treasurer
Dr. Kyle H. Turner is chief executive officer of McCallum-Turner, Inc. His experience includes nuclear power plant siting, licensing, operations, safety, environmental compliance and waste management. Turner has served on a number of ANS committees, chaired the Operations and Power Division and the Colorado local section, and served on the ANS Board of Directors. His term as ANS Treasurer runs to June 2003.


New Board Members
The five new members of the ANS Board of Directors who began their three-year terms at the 146th meeting of the Board are:
  • Marvin Fertel, Senior Vice President, Nuclear Energy Institute, Washington, DC
  • W. Gary Gates, Vice President, Nuclear Operations, Omaha Public Power District and Chief Nuclear Officer for Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station, Omaha, NE
  • Sophie Gutner, Shift Technical Advisor, Dominion Energy, Glen Allen, VA
  • Donald Hintz, President, Entergy Corp., New Orleans, LA
  • Yoshiaki Oka, Professor, Nuclear Engineering Research Laboratory, University of Tokyo
Named to serve the remaining year of Kyle Turner's term on the Board of Directors was:
  • Dr. Alberto L. Casadei, Manager, Core Engineering, Nuclear Fuel Engineering, Westinghouse Electric Company, Pittsburgh, PA

The new student member of the ANS Board with a two-year term is:
  • Shana Browde, a graduate student at the University of Michigan
