Nuclear Power as an Energy Solution Highlights ANS Meeting

The promise and reality of nuclear power as an energy solution are the focus of the American Nuclear Society's (ANS) 2009 Winter Meeting, being held November 15-19 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC.

A plenary session on "Nuclear Power: Crafting Energy Solutions" will open the annual meeting on Monday, November 15. Prominent leaders in the national energy debate are on the discussion panel, including

At a special session Monday afternoon following the opening plenary, ANS President Tom Sanders (Manager, Global Nuclear Fuels, Sandia National Laboratories) will host a dialogue with ANS members on global opportunities for right-sized reactors. This session will feature presentations from representatives of several countries discussing the need for smaller systems.

Two embedded topical meetings will be held in conjunction with the 2009 ANS Winter Meeting: Risk Management and the 2009 Young Professionals Congress. There also will be two Professional Development Workshops held: "Next Generation Safeguards Specialist" and "New Reactor Licensing - Lessons Learned." The ANS Nuclear Technology Expo will feature over 100 exhibitors representing leaders in nuclear science. Carl Rau of Bechtel Nuclear Power and Mark H. Ayers of the Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO are serving as General Meeting Co-Chairs.
