The American Nuclear Society (ANS) extends congratulations to Dr. George Apostolakis and Mr. William Magwood on their presidential appointments to be Commissioners on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The nominations require U.S. Senate confirmation. If confirmed, the two new Commissioners will fill the two remaining vacant seats and bring the U.S. NRC to its full membership of five.

"I'm happy to extend congratulations to Dr. Apostolakis and Mr. Magwood on behalf of their nearly 11,000 colleagues in the American Nuclear Society," said Jack Tuohy, ANS Executive Director. "I commend the President and his team for identifying and selecting such outstanding candidates. It is essential that the U.S. NRC be fully staffed with highly qualified and experienced professionals as the Commission moves forward in regulating a prosperous and vibrant nuclear industry."

ANS acknowledges Dr. Apostolakis' long-time participation in nuclear science and technology. Dr. Apostolakis is the Korea Electric Power Company professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering and a Professor of Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Apostolakis joined ANS in 1974. He received the Tommy Thompson Award for his contributions to improvement of reactor safety in 1999 and the Arthur Holly Compton Award in Education in 2005 from the ANS. In 1992, he was named an ANS Fellow, one of the most prestigious honors that can be bestowed by the Society.

ANS also recognizes Mr. Magwood's service in governance and management of nuclear science and technology issues. He was the longest-serving head of the U.S. civilian nuclear technology program, serving as the Director of Nuclear Energy within the U.S. Department of Energy from May 1998 until he stepped down on May 24, 2005. He then founded the firm Advanced Energy Strategies to provide strategic advice to domestic and international clients. Mr. Magwood joined the American Nuclear Society in 1989.
