The Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy is the head of the Office of Nuclear Energy within the U.S. Department of Energy. Dr. Miller will be responsible for the Department's nuclear technology research and development, management of the Department's nuclear technology infrastructure, and support to nuclear education in the United States.
"I'm enthused to extend congratulations to Dr. Miller on behalf of the nearly 11,000 members of the American Nuclear Society," said Jack Tuohy, ANS Executive Director. "This selection is consistent with President Obama's pledge to select highly qualified individuals who will base our energy policy on science, not politics. I commend the president and his team for identifying and selecting such an outstanding candidate."
"Dr. Miller is an ANS Fellow - the highest honor bestowed by ANS. His understanding of the issues and demonstrated leadership will be an invaluable asset to the Administration and the country."
ANS acknowledges Dr. Miller's long-time participation in nuclear science and technology. Dr. Miller first joined the American Nuclear Society in 1973 as a student member. In 1982, the ANS named Dr. Miller an ANS Fellow, one of the most prestigious honors that can be bestowed by the Society. The citation for Dr. Miller states: By his demonstrated technical excellence and managerial acumen and together with a rare understanding of human aspirations, [he] has provided genuine leadership and inspiration for those who have entered, or seek to enter, nuclear science and engineering.
