Senate confirms NRC appointments

The Senate confirmed two nominations to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission last week. Democratic Commissioner Gregory Jaczko, whose current term was set to expire this coming June, was confirmed for a second five-year term. Before joining the commission, he served as Senator Harry Reid's (D-Nev.) science policy advisor. More information on his background and time with the commission can be found at the following URL:

Kristine Svinicki joins the commission for her first term as its newest member. She previously served as a Republican staff member for the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces. Prior to her committee work, she was a senior policy advisor to Senator Larry Craig (R-Idaho) on nuclear and environmental issues.

These confirmations leave the Commission with one remaining vacancy, created by the death of Commissioner Ed McGaffigan last year. The White House has yet to forward a nominee to the Senate.
