American Nuclear Society honors two nuclear experts

Today the American Nuclear Society (ANS) honors two nuclear professionals by bestowing on them the status of ANS Fellow during the 2007 ANS Annual Meeting in Boston, MA. Receiving the society's highest honor as a Fellow recognizes each individual's extraordinary leadership within and acknowledges their major contributions to the nuclear field.

ANS Fellows:

Michael W. Golay, a professor of nuclear science and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is being honored for seminal contributions over a range of topics critical to the advancement of nuclear power. These include methodologies for assessing and achieving simplicity and economy in reactor design, condition monitoring, diagnostic systems and associated comprehensive sensor networks as well as non-prescriptive regulation and licensing of operating and advanced reactors.

Steven J. Zinkle, director of the Materials Science and Technology Division for Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, is being honored for outstanding achievements as a leading international expert of radiation effects on ceramic and metallic materials for advanced nuclear power systems (fission and fusion). His research, addressing both basic science and applied engineering questions, has been instrumental in establishing scientific-based performance limits of materials proposed for future nuclear energy applications.

The prestigious designation of ANS Fellow acknowledges the extraordinary leadership of nuclear professionals in different disciplines relating to research, invention, engineering, safety, technical leadership and teaching. Each recipient received a certificate of distinction presented during the ANS Awards Luncheon in Boston, MA. These nuclear leaders join an elite group of people listed on the ANS webpage at http://www.ans.org/honors/fellows/.
