Nuclear conference advances efforts to address U.S. energy needs

The American Nuclear Society's 2005 Winter Meeting presents an important convergence of industry leaders and scientific contributors in the organization's first full conference since comprehensive energy legislation designated nuclear's role in the nation's energy portfolio. The meeting takes place November 13-17 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC.

At 8:00 a.m., Monday's Opening Plenary, "Talking About Nuclear Differently: A Critical Element for Our Future," features remarks from the meeting's General Co-chairs, Thomas A. Christopher, CEO at AREVA, and Michael Wallace, President of Constellation Generation Group. Industry leaders will offer social and economic context for the solutions prepared by nuclear professionals.

Plenary Speakers include:
  • U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska
  • Patrick Moore, Ph.D. (Author of "The Sensible Environmentalist")
  • Ann Stouffer Bisconti (President, Bisconti Research, Inc.)
  • James K. Asselstine (Managing Director, Lehman Brothers)
The President's Special Session on Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. will address emerging nuclear nonproliferation issues. Acknowledging problems in the current nonproliferation regime, invited speakers Ambassador Linton Brooks of the NSSA, Ambassador Sergio Duarte of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry and Mr. Abdul S. Minty from the South African Foreign Ministry will discuss the 2005 Review Conference of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and describe efforts to find solutions. The complete program is available at www.ans.org/meetings/winter.

Meeting officials include Co-chairs Mr. Christopher and Mr. Wallace along with Honorary Chairs U.S. Senators Chuck Hagel and James Inhofe. Brian Booth, of Constellation Energy, and Donald Hoffman, of EXCEL Service Corporation, share responsibilities as Assistant General Chairs for the meeting. AREVA's Gary Peters serves as Plenary Session Chair. Technical Program Chair, David Anderson, of Electric Boat Corporation coordinated the 89 technical sessions featuring research and designs for nuclear solutions that will be presented throughout the week.
