Society encourages diverse talent in growing nuclear industry

The American Nuclear Society's Board of Directors approved two position statements that are now available to the public. "We recognize the need for new nuclear plants to maintain and extend the benefits and quality of life provided by nuclear science and technology," explained Larry Foulke, chair of the ANS Public Policy Committee. "Therefore, we aim to increase the viability of nuclear professions as career options for all individuals so we can engage the knowledge and talents of diverse populations."

The Board of Directors approved the following position statements.

Position Statement No. 66: "Diversity in the Nuclear Profession" endorses equality of opportunities available to individuals pursing and advancing in careers related to nuclear science and technology.

Position Statement No. 56: "The Need for Near Term Deployment of New Nuclear Power Plants" reflects revisions to an existing document based on updated energy outlook statistics.

Position statements represent the Society's opinion on issues of interest to the general public and policy makers. They can be viewed at www.ans.org/pi/ps. The Society develops positions based on related technical papers and input from the professional membership. The Board approved the statements on June 9, 2005.
