Nuclear conference highlights sector integration in new political environment
"Restarting nuclear plant construction in the United States, developing Generation IV technologies, deploying advanced fuel cycles, realizing the promise of medical isotopes-all of these efforts will rise or fall over the next decade," stated William D. Magwood IV, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Director of the Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology and General Chair of the meeting. "Having a community that is unified in its support of these diverse needs is essential to success and the ANS will play a large role in aiding this cause."
Speakers at Monday's 8:00 a.m. session include Kyle E. McSlarrow, Deputy Energy Secretary at the U.S. DOE; Donald J. Johnston, Secretary General at OECD; Theron M. Bradley Jr, Chief Engineer at NASA; and Nils J. Diaz, Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). They will discuss how public and private interests will work together to move nuclear applications forward in the current political environment.
Representatives from leading nuclear organizations will be available to answer attendees' questions about innovative products and services during the Nuclear Technology Expo, located in the Lower Level Exhibit Hall of the Omni Shoreham Hotel. The complete program of the ANS Winter Meeting is available at www.ans.org/meetings/winter.
Together with Mr. Magwood, meeting officials include Deputy General Chair, Donald R. Hoffman of EXCEL Services Corporation and Technical Program Chair, Mark Reinhart of the U.S. NRC.
