A new era in nuclear science and technology

The nuclear science community will attend the 2000 American Nuclear Society (ANS) Annual Meeting, June 4-8, 2000, at the Town & Country Hotel and Convention Center, in San Diego, California.

Two ANS topical meetings, DOE Spent Nuclear Fuel and Fissile Material Management and Advanced Nuclear Installations Safety, are being held concurrently with the Annual Meeting.

Opening the meeting on Monday, June 5, is a plenary session on the theme, "Nuclear Science and Technology: Beginning a New Era". During this session, lead by National Meeting Chair, Loyd Wright (Southern California Edison, San Onofre), panelists will discuss the future of nuclear technology.

Technical sessions during the meeting will cover diverse topics: safe food through food irradiation, license renewal of nuclear power plants, plutonium storage and conversion, and medical applications of isotopes and radiation.

A special session is scheduled for Tuesday, June 6, describing the effects of the Cerro Grande Fire in New Mexico. The topic will focus on Los Alamos National Laboratory emergency responses and protection of the facilities.

Members of the media should sign in for free press badges and meeting materials at the ANS registration area in the Atlas Foyer of the Town & Country Hotel and Convention Center. Media registration times are Sunday, June 4th, 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Monday, June 5th through Wednesday, June 7th, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Thursday, June 8, 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
