Nuclear conference highlights sector integration in new political environment

Nuclear professionals will convene November 14-18 at the American Nuclear Society's 2004 Winter Meeting and Nuclear Technology Expo at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington DC.

The conference theme, "Leadership Toward a Progressive, Integrated Nuclear Community - Going Forward Together," highlights the role of decision makers within the nuclear community and their support of the expansion of nuclear energy through research, design, and management activities.

William D. Magwood IV, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Director of the Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology who is also serving as the meeting's General Chair, will introduce the opening plenary session on Nov. 15. Speakers at the 8:00 a.m. session include Kyle E. McSlarrow, Deputy Energy Secretary at the U.S. DOE; Donald J. Johnston, Secretary General at OECD; Theron M. Bradley Jr, Chief Engineer at NASA; and Nils J. Diaz, Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). They will discuss how public and private interests will work together to move nuclear applications forward in the current political environment.

The President's Special Session: Energy and the Environment on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 4:00 p.m. features invited speakers U.S. Senator Pete V. Domenici, author and environmentalist James Lovelock, Gail H. Marcus from OECD/NEA, and Alain Bucaille from AREVA. Representatives from leading nuclear organizations will be available to answer attendees' questions about innovative products and services during the Nuclear Technology Expo, located in the Lower Level Exhibit Hall of the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

Together with Mr. Magwood, meeting officials include Deputy General Chair, Donald R. Hoffman of EXCEL Services Corporation and Technical Program Chair, Mark Reinhart of the U.S. NRC.
