Turning Ideas into Reality - National Engineers Week February 22-28, 2004

ANS is proud to be a contributing society to National Engineers Week, celebrated in February of each year. ANS members coordinate programs and activities at schools and public events to educate students and others about the important role played by engineers - particularly nuclear engineers - in our present and future well-being.

The ANS Outreach Department has mailed information packets to the chairs of local sections, student sections, and plant branches. The information and materials in the packets will help plan programs and activities that raise awareness of engineers and engineering in communities throughout the United States. Volunteer kits are available from National Engineers Week at www.eweek.org.

Any member who would like to organize an event in his or her local community may contact the Outreach Department via e-mail for additional information or materials. (Please submit all requests by February 4.)

Over a half-century ago, the work of Enrico Fermi set in motion the nuclear age. In the last fifty years, nuclear engineers have moved their knowledge from the university laboratory to the world's factories, food-processing plants, heath care facilities, and into the far reaches of outer space. The work of nuclear engineers has created technology that we encounter every day. It makes our medical supplies sterile, our road signs reflective, and helps control the quality of our ice cream. ANS members can help communicate that to the students of today, who will be the engineers of tomorrow.
