Plenary Session - Nuclear Technology: Achieving Global Economic Growth Safeguarding the Environment
Rudolph Giuliani has served the people of New York City and the state of New York for over 30 years, beginning as a clerk in the United States District Court of New York and ultimately becoming Mayor of New York City. Under Giuliani's leadership, New York City became the best-known example of the resurgence of urban America. From dealing with the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attack on New York City, to his success at cleaning up Times Square and other public spaces around the City, to closing the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island, Giuliani worked tirelessly as mayor to pass New York to the next generation better and more beautiful than it was before he entered office. Most recently, Entergy Nuclear engaged Mayor Giuliani and his firm, Giuliani Partners, as consultants and advisors on security and emergency planning issues throughout Entergy Nuclear's northeast region.
Ed Tirello has spent 32 years of his career as a utility industry research analyst and has spent the last three years as a strategist on the investment banking side. Frequently, Tirello has been quoted in the trade media on macro industry events and trends. His latest prediction suggests that two new sectors for growth in the industry will be distribution (with ancillary services leading the way) and transmission (with the formation of a $100 billion plus high voltage transmission industry.)
John Ritch, Director General of the World Nuclear Association in London, came to the WNA after serving seven years as U.S. ambassador to UN organizations in Vienna, among them the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization. In Vienna, he actively promoted the IAEA's global strengthened-safeguards system and new conventions on nuclear safety. He participated in the U.S.-North Korea nuclear negotiations and the UN Conferences reviewing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1995 and 2000. Under Ritch's leadership, the WNA emphasizes the reality and severity of the climate change problem; the value of nuclear power as a safe, large-scale source of climate friendly energy; and the urgent need for an agreed program of international action that is realistic as to its targets, technologies and mechanisms.
Hajimu Maeda is chairman of the WANO Governing Board, but prior to being elected to that position, Maeda's career spanned more than 40 years with Kansai Electric Power Company, the second largest power company in Japan. As Executive Vice President of Kansai EPC, Maeda was responsible for all nuclear power activities. Kansai EPC serves about 12 million customers and operates 11 nuclear power units with a total installed capacity of almost 10,000 MW.
V.K. Chaturvedi, Chairman and Managing Director, of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, brings with him 34 years of experience of design and construction, commissioning and operation of nuclear power units. He has committed to continue running the existing nuclear power plants safely and at as high as possible plant load factors (80% plus) so that much needed revenue is generated.
Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei is currently serving his second term as director general, International Atomic Energy Agency. During his career, ElBaradei has served as diplomat, international civil servant and scholar, affording him the opportunity to become closely familiar with the work and process of international organizations, particularly in the fields of international peace and security and international law making. He has lectured widely in the fields of international law, international organizations, arms control and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and is the author of various articles and books on these subjects.
