2003 ANS/ENS International Winter Meeting plenary announced

Eisenhower's Vision for the Atom Updated for International Nuclear Meeting
Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to Examine Today's Issues

Observers of the 50th anniversary of the Atoms for Peace speech will explore contemporary applications of nuclear science at the American Nuclear Society/European Nuclear Society 2003 International Winter Meeting and Nuclear Technology Expo Nov. 16-20 at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans.
"The United States pledges before you - and therefore before the world - its determination to help solve the fearful atomic dilemma - to devote its entire heart and mind to find the way by which the miraculous inventiveness of man shall not be dedicated to his death, but consecrated to his life." --President Dwight Eisenhower, December 1953, before the United Nations General Assembly
President Eisenhower's mandate was crucial fifty years ago and the commitment is no less imperative today. The conference theme, "Nuclear Technology: Achieving Global Economic Growth While Safeguarding the Environment," will view competing demands of growing needs for power, medical, space and food technologies with concerns for the world environment. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will lead keynote speakers at the opening plenary session on Nov. 17 in examining how opinions held by the public, policy makers and investors influence the future role of nuclear technologies in meeting expanding demands for the atom's various roles worldwide.

Several U.S. government officials have also been invited to speak at the opening plenary, pending schedule availability. In addition, Edward J. Tirello, Jr., managing director and senior power strategist for Berenson & Company, will discuss the business side of nuclear growth. Dr. Ernest Moniz will offer highlights of the MIT study he co-authored on continued viability of nuclear power technologies. Alain Bugat, chairman and CEO of the French Atomic Energy Commission will introduce a global perspective on nuclear applications. International speakers joining him through video include Vijay Chaturvedi, chairman and managing director of Nuclear Power Corporation of India, Ltd.; Hajimu Maeda, chairman of the World Association of Nuclear Operators; John Ritch, director of the World Nuclear Association in London; and Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.

More than 1,400 people from around the world will attend this joint ANS/ENS meeting featuring the embedded topical meeting, GLOBAL 2003: "Atoms for Prosperity: Updating Eisenhower's Global Vision for Nuclear Energy." The ANS/ENS International Meeting and the concurrent GLOBAL 2003 topical meeting will incorporate 750 presentations covering such issues as nuclear plant systems and decommissioning, nuclear education, environmental sciences, and non-power and emerging technologies.

Representatives from leading organizations will be available to answer attendees' questions about their innovative products and services at the Nuclear Technology Expo, located in the French Market Exhibit Hall at the Hyatt Regency.

Honorary meeting chair is former Nuclear Regulatory Commissioner Greta Dicus. Entergy Nuclear's John R. McGaha and Andrej Stritar of the Nuclear Safety Administration, Slovenia, are general co-chairs of the 2003 ANS/ENS Annual Winter Meeting. Maurice J. Ades, Westinghouse Savannah River Co., serves as technical program chair.
