Washington Office Action Alert: Contact Congress to preserve funding for Yucca Mountain project

• The House of Representatives is scheduled to consider H.R. 2754, the 2004 Energy and Water Appropriations bill tomorrow, July 18

• The bill includes $764 million for the Nuclear Waste Fund (Yucca Mountain activities), an increase of $176 million over the amount requested from the Department of Energy

• It also directs the Department of Energy to begin development of a rail line in the State of Nevada and begin the necessary environmental and engineering analysis, using the funds provided

• There will likely be an effort from the Nevada delegation to reduce the appropriation or delete the transportation-related language when the bill comes to the floor

• The Chairman of the House Subcommittee, Rep. Hobson, increased the funding level significantly to help ensure that the project stays on track for reception of waste in a timely manner

Please contact your U.S. Congressman by phone or email and ask him/her to oppose any efforts to change the provisions in H.R. 2754 related to the Nuclear Waste Fund. For contact information, go to the ANS website: http://www.ans.org/members/capitol/.

Because the bill is expected to come up tomorrow, it is critical that contact be made as soon as possible

Contact Doug Wasitis in the ANS Washington office at 202-312-7482 or via e-mail for any questions on this alert.
