Washington Office Action Alert: Contact Congress to preserve funding for Yucca Mountain project
The bill includes $764 million for the Nuclear Waste Fund (Yucca Mountain activities), an increase of $176 million over the amount requested from the Department of Energy
It also directs the Department of Energy to begin development of a rail line in the State of Nevada and begin the necessary environmental and engineering analysis, using the funds provided
There will likely be an effort from the Nevada delegation to reduce the appropriation or delete the transportation-related language when the bill comes to the floor
The Chairman of the House Subcommittee, Rep. Hobson, increased the funding level significantly to help ensure that the project stays on track for reception of waste in a timely manner
Please contact your U.S. Congressman by phone or email and ask him/her to oppose any efforts to change the provisions in H.R. 2754 related to the Nuclear Waste Fund. For contact information, go to the ANS website: http://www.ans.org/members/capitol/.
Because the bill is expected to come up tomorrow, it is critical that contact be made as soon as possible
Contact Doug Wasitis in the ANS Washington office at 202-312-7482 or via e-mail for any questions on this alert.
