Nuclear conference explores unlimited opportunities

Professionals representing the many sectors of nuclear science and technology will discuss their technical, commercial, and political perspectives on the nuclear scene at the 2003 American Nuclear Society (ANS) Annual Meeting, June 1-5, 2003, at the Town & Country Hotel and Convention Center, in San Diego, California.

Opening the conference, Monday June 2nd, a plenary session titled, "The Nuclear Technology Expansion- Unlimited Opportunities" will feature government and industry leaders including:
  • Nils J. Diaz (Chairman, US Nuclear Regulatory Commission)
  • William Magwood IV (Director, Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology, US Department of Energy)
  • J. Russell Dyer (Yucca Mountain Project Manager, US Department of Energy)
  • Franklin Chang-Diaz (Director, Advanced Space Propulsion Laboratory and NASA Astronaut)
  • Marvin Fertel (Chief Operations Officer, Nuclear Energy Institute)
  • Bertrand Barre (VP of Research and Development, COGEMA of France)
Conference technical sessions will explore issues of emerging nuclear technologies, environmental safety and health, fuel cycles, homeland security, new nuclear plant construction, nonpower radiation applications, and reactor physics and shielding.

Three ANS topical meetings, Decommissioning and Spent-Fuel Management, Risk Management: Now more than ever, and Accelerator Applications in a Nuclear Renaissance, will occur concurrently with the Annual Meeting.

The official program can be found on the ANS web site. Honorary General Chairs of the event include Admiral Dennis Wilkinson, President Emeritus of INPO and Linden Blue of General Atomics. Ted Quinn, ANS Past President and advisor to General Atomics, serves as General Chair, with Assistant General Chair, Henry Chiu of General Atomics, and Technical Program Chair, Per Peterson, Department Head of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

Monday, June 2nd through June 4th, ANS welcomes the media to sign in for complimentary conference badges in the Grand Foyer ANS registration area and to visit the Media Room for additional materials, in Pacific 6 Room of the Town & Country Hotel and Convention Center.
