New NRC Chairman, Nils Diaz, appointed by President Bush

Serving on the five-member Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) since 1996, Nils Diaz has been designated NRC Chairman by President Bush this week. ANS congratulates Diaz on this accomplishment and looks forward to continued work with him.

In addition to serving two terms on the NRC, Diaz brings tremendous expertise in the nuclear field to his new role in the Commission. He is Professor Emeritus from the Nuclear Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida. He has served as director of the Innovative Nuclear Space Power Institute as well as the president and chief engineer of Florida Nuclear Associates.

With his extensive experience, Diaz has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles on a wide range of topics including nuclear reactor kinetics and safety, instrumentation and control, imaging and non-destructive examination, advanced reactor concepts, nuclear fuels, and nuclear space power and propulsion.

Nils Diaz is a long-time member and elected fellow of the ANS.
